The Story of Prophets Ismail (Ishmael) and Ishaq (Isaac) in English

Prophet Ibrahim and His Family

Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) is a central figure in Islamic tradition and is known as the father of the prophets. He had two sons, Ismail (Ishmael) and Ishaq (Isaac), each of whom played significant roles in the continuation of Ibrahim’s legacy and the spread of monotheism.

The Birth of Ismail

Ismail was the first son of Ibrahim, born to Hajar (Hagar), Ibrahim's wife. Due to the jealousy of Ibrahim’s first wife, Sarah, Allah commanded Ibrahim to take Hajar and baby Ismail to the barren deserts of Arabia. Trusting in Allah’s wisdom, Ibrahim left them with some provisions and prayed for their safety.

Hajar and Ismail in the Desert

When their provisions ran out, Hajar ran between the hills of Safa and Marwah in search of water, a desperate act that Allah rewarded by miraculously bringing forth the Zamzam well at Ismail’s feet. This well provided water and sustenance, enabling Hajar and Ismail to survive in the harsh conditions. This event is commemorated during the Hajj pilgrimage, where Muslims perform the Sa’i, running between Safa and Marwah.

The Sacrifice of Ismail

As Ismail grew older, Ibrahim received a divine vision in which he was commanded to sacrifice his beloved son. When he shared this vision with Ismail, his son, demonstrating immense faith and submission to Allah, agreed to fulfill the command. However, as Ibrahim was about to perform the sacrifice, Allah intervened, sending a ram to be sacrificed in Ismail's place. This act of obedience and faith is commemorated annually during Eid al-Adha, where Muslims around the world perform the ritual sacrifice of an animal.

Ismail’s Legacy

Ismail grew up in the deserts of Arabia, becoming proficient in archery and an esteemed leader of his people. He married into the local Arab tribes, and his descendants became known as the Arabs. Among his descendants is Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who brought the final revelation, the Quran.

The Birth of Ishaq

Later, Allah blessed Ibrahim and Sarah with a son, Ishaq (Isaac), despite their old age. Ishaq’s birth was a miracle and a fulfillment of Allah’s promise to Ibrahim that he would be the father of a great nation. Ishaq was the father of Yaqub (Jacob), who was later named Israel, and from whom the twelve tribes of Israel descended.

Ishaq’s Role and Legacy

Ishaq continued his father Ibrahim’s mission of spreading monotheism and righteousness. He was a patriarch to the Israelites and played a crucial role in the lineage of many prophets, including Yaqub (Jacob) and Yusuf (Joseph). His life was marked by devotion to Allah and the continuation of his father’s covenant with Allah.

Lessons from the Stories of Ismail and Ishaq

Faith and Trust in Allah: Both Ismail and Ishaq's stories highlight the importance of absolute faith and trust in Allah’s commands, even when faced with severe tests.

Obedience and Submission: The willingness of Ismail to be sacrificed and Ibrahim’s obedience to Allah's command reflect the ultimate submission to Allah’s will, a central theme in Islam.

Divine Mercy and Intervention: Allah’s intervention during Ismail’s near-sacrifice and the miraculous birth of Ishaq demonstrate His mercy and power.

Legacy of Prophethood: Both Ismail and Ishaq played significant roles in the continuation of the prophetic tradition, establishing the foundations for future generations of prophets and believers.


The stories of Prophets Ismail and Ishaq are deeply interwoven with themes of faith, sacrifice, and the fulfillment of divine promises, serving as enduring examples of piety and devotion in Islamic tradition.
