The Story of Prophet Zakariya (Zechariah) and Prophet Yahya (John) in English

Prophet Zakariya

Prophet Zakariya (peace be upon him) was a righteous man and a prophet of Allah. He was entrusted with the care of Maryam (Mary), the mother of Prophet Isa (Jesus), and was known for his piety and devotion. Zakariya was a devout servant of Allah, spending his days in prayer and worship.

Zakariya's Prayer for a Child

Zakariya and his wife were childless and had reached an advanced age. Despite their deep desire for a child, they had not been blessed with one. Zakariya, seeing the miraculous provisions given to Maryam by Allah, was inspired to pray fervently for a child. He prayed to Allah with sincerity and humility, asking for a righteous heir who would continue his legacy of prophethood and guidance.

In the Quran, Zakariya's prayer is mentioned:

"My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white [hairs], and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy. And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]." (Quran 19:4-6)

The Annunciation of Yahya

In response to his heartfelt prayers, Allah sent the angel Jibril (Gabriel) to deliver the glad tidings of a son named Yahya (John). Zakariya was astonished by this news due to his and his wife's old age. However, Allah assured him that nothing is impossible for Him, and He can grant a child even in old age. Yahya was born to Zakariya and his wife, marking a miraculous event as they had been barren for so long. Yahya grew up to be a devout and pious servant of Allah. He was known for his wisdom, compassion, and strong adherence to the divine laws. Yahya's life was dedicated to calling people to righteousness and preparing them for the coming of Prophet Isa.

Prophet Yahya's Mission

Yahya's mission was to guide the Children of Israel back to the path of righteousness. He preached repentance, sincerity, and adherence to Allah's commands. Yahya was known for his ascetic lifestyle, humility, and unwavering commitment to the truth. He baptized people in the River Jordan, symbolizing their repentance and purification.

Yahya's Martyrdom

Yahya's unwavering commitment to truth and justice eventually led to his martyrdom. He openly condemned the immoral actions of the ruling authorities, which made him a target. Despite the dangers, Yahya remained steadfast in his mission, ultimately sacrificing his life for the cause of truth and righteousness.
