The Story of Prophet Musa (Moses) in English

Early Life

Prophet Musa (Moses) is one of the most prominent prophets in Islamic tradition, with his story being one of the most detailed in the Quran. Musa was born at a time when the Pharaoh of Egypt had ordered the killing of all newborn Israelite boys, fearing the loss of his throne due to a prophecy that one of them would overthrow him. To save her son, Musa's mother placed him in a basket and set it afloat on the Nile River, trusting in Allah's protection.

The basket was discovered by the Pharaoh’s wife, Asiya, who convinced the Pharaoh to adopt the baby despite his initial reluctance. Musa was thus raised in the Pharaoh’s palace, receiving the best education and treatment.

Musa's Departure from Egypt

As a young man, Musa was aware of his Israelite heritage. One day, he saw an Egyptian taskmaster beating an Israelite slave. In an attempt to help, Musa struck the Egyptian, accidentally killing him. Fearing for his life, Musa fled Egypt and traveled to the land of Midian.

Life in Midian

In Midian, Musa met and helped a group of women watering their flocks. Their father, Prophet Shuayb (Jethro), welcomed Musa into his home. Musa eventually married one of Shuayb's daughters and spent the next several years living a peaceful life as a shepherd.

The Call to Prophethood

While traveling with his family, Musa saw a fire on Mount Sinai. When he approached the fire, Allah spoke to him, commanding him to remove his shoes as he was in a sacred place. Allah then appointed Musa as a prophet and instructed him to return to Egypt to free the Israelites from Pharaoh’s tyranny. Allah gave Musa two miracles: his staff, which could turn into a serpent, and his hand, which would turn white when placed under his arm.

Musa's Return to Egypt

Musa, along with his brother Harun (Aaron), who was also appointed by Allah to assist him, returned to Egypt. They confronted Pharaoh, demanding that he release the Israelites from bondage. Pharaoh, arrogant and dismissive, refused and accused Musa of sorcery.

The Plagues of Egypt

To demonstrate Allah’s power, Musa performed several miracles, but Pharaoh and his people remained obstinate. Consequently, Allah sent a series of plagues upon Egypt, including blood, frogs, lice, locusts, boils, and darkness. Despite these afflictions, Pharaoh's heart remained hardened.

The Exodus

Finally, Allah commanded Musa to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. They left in haste, and Pharaoh’s army pursued them. At the Red Sea, Allah instructed Musa to strike the sea with his staff, parting the waters and allowing the Israelites to cross on dry ground. When Pharaoh and his army attempted to follow, the waters returned, drowning them.

The Wilderness and Mount Sinai

After their escape, the Israelites wandered in the desert. They often complained and struggled with faith, but Musa continued to guide them with patience. On Mount Sinai, Allah gave Musa the Torah, containing laws and commandments for the Israelites. During his absence, some Israelites, influenced by Samiri, began to worship a golden calf. Musa returned, destroyed the idol, and called his people to repent.

The Quest for the Promised Land

Musa led the Israelites towards the Promised Land, but due to their repeated disobedience and lack of faith, they were condemned to wander the desert for forty years. Musa himself was not permitted to enter the Promised Land but was given a glimpse of it from Mount Nebo before he passed away.
